Ulster Bank launches new features on mobile banking app as busy festive season gets underway

Reports almost 48 million mobile app interactions so far this year

Ulster Bank has added a number of new features to its mobile banking app, ahead of the busy festive season. At a time of year when it’s particularly important to manage your finances, customers can now have the app on multiple devices for the first time; they can view their overdraft limit to avoid any surprises; transaction descriptions are even clearer than before; and Standing Orders can be amended. It comes as demand for mobile banking increases. There have been almost 48 million interactions in the first 10 months of this year, an increase of 24 per cent on the same period in 2015, and there are two to three interactions every second.

The new features are part of a range of new measures introduced to the app since July 2016. Customers can now apply for products such as a personal loan, a savings account, a credit card or an overdraft, using their phone or tablet and they can also pay their Ulster Bank credit card bill directly.

Last year, Ulster Bank was the first bank in Ireland to offer Touch ID on our app, meaning customers can now log in safely and securely on their iPhone using just their fingerprint. It’s been warmly received and 44% of all customers with Touch ID enabled iPhones log in using the technology. This latest update means customers can use the same technology to log in to the app on their iPad, putting mobile banking firmly at their fingertips and fingerprints. Ulster Bank, as part of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, worked with the Royal National Institute for the Blind to ensure the app is accessible and usable by blind and partially sighted customers. It includes TalkBack functionality, available on all new smartphones, which offers spoken, audible, and vibration feedback to your device. This helps customers manage their money confidentially and independently.

One of the most innovative and valued features of the Ulster Bank mobile banking app is the market-leading Get Cash facility, which is used over 2,000 times a week. It allows customers to withdraw money from an ATM without their bank card, meaning a customer is never without access to their cash – even when they’ve forgotten their card. A new Near Me feature has been added to the app, which helps customers find the nearest ATM so they can use their Get Cash code and withdraw their money.

Speaking about these latest innovations, Director of Customer Experience and Products, Maeve McMahon, Ulster Bank said:

We are determined to make life easier and simpler for our customers and we know from talking to them that the mobile banking app is a really important part of that. Our customers lead busy lives and it’s important that we provide a service at a time and place that’s convenient for them. That’s why they can now apply for personal loans, savings accounts, credit cards and overdrafts using their phone or tablet. And after listening to customer feedback, we have extended Touch ID to iPads to enhance the service even further.  These improvements will make it easier and simpler for our customers to keep track of their finances, particularly during the busy festive season. Ulster Bank aims to be the number one bank for customer service, trust and advocacy by 2020 and having innovative products and services, such as our dynamic mobile banking app, is one of the ways we will achieve that aim.”

The latest updates to the mobile banking app include:

  • Access to the app on multiple devices and platforms for the first time. For example, a customer can have the app on their home iPad (iOS platform), work Windows phone (Windows platform) and personal Samsung phone (Android platform).
  • Customers can now view their overdraft limit on the app to avoid surprises; transaction descriptions are clearer; and Standing Orders can be amended.
  • Customers who have business and personal accounts are now able to move between these accounts on the app.
  • Apply for a personal loan, a savings account, a credit card or an overdraft by visiting Our Products.
  • As well as using Touch ID on your iPhone, you can now login to the app on an iPad using just your fingerprint.
  • Find the location of the nearest Ulster Bank or EasyCash ATM to use the Get Cash facility without a debit card.
  • Customers can share account details, such as their IBAN, directly from the app using an email or text.
  • Choose which account information to display on your Apple Watch.
  • Amend the order your accounts are displayed in the app.
  • Ulster Bank is committed to making payments within the app as safe and secure as possible for customers and with that in mind, you can now send yourself or a beneficiary a PDF receipt of payment.
